Winning Designs Selected!
Over 400 people voted and the results are in! Congratulations to: Danielle Capelli and Darci Deaton for answering a call for public art that represents STEAMED, Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Education and Design. Danielle's design will be painted this week and revealed on October 6th; Darci's design will be installed in the spring.
Danielle Capelli (Secondary Education Art, ’18) Deep “I chose to use colors that not only connected to the University of Idaho specifically, but that connected to the idea of STEAMED as well. In these paintings, there are 7 different colors that correspond with the 7 letters in STEAMED. I wanted to show that like these disciplines, the colors work together in harmony, and need each other to be successful. I decided to use finite geometric shapes to depict the structure of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, while exploring the geomorphic composition it creates when put together and the influence of color to depict the aspects of Art, Education and Design.”
Darci Deaton (Interdisciplinary Studies ’15) Vandals Mural “Each letter of the word "VANDALS" has an overlaid set of lines that depict an abstract image related to the corresponding letter of STEAMED. For example the "V" has the planetary orbits as its image to represent the planetary studies in the Physics (science) department at U of I. The image of a circuit represents Technology; gears - Engineering, a building and ruler - Art and Architecture, a bar graph - Math, a person's face - Education, and a lightbulb for Design. These images are hidden within the name of our students, vandals, and within the abstract depiction of the Palouse, with its rolling green hills and blue sky.”
We hit our original $6500 goal! Thank you to everyone that has supported this project!
We have extended our campaign goal in an effort to raise another $1500 to establish a walkway to access the murals and provide honorariums recognizing the winning artists! With additional funding, we would also have the opportunity to install a mural in conjunction with the Rocky Mountain Print exchange and could use funds to help pour concrete pads near the Admin lawn for student/community sculptures.
Edit
We received over 400 submissions, and voting is now closed. Thank you to everyone that participated.
